Gil Schafer III is the principal of G. P. Schafer Architect, PLLC, a firm based in New York specializing in classical residential architecture with a particular emphasis on traditional design and craftsmanship, rigorous detail,  and, most importantly, livability.

The work of Gil Schafer III is widely published, both here in the U.S. and abroad, and has been the recipient of major design and preservation awards, including two recent AIA Awards and three Palladio Awards for excellence in traditional residential design. The firm's projects vary in scale and scope from potting sheds and apartment renovations to equestrian facilities, country houses and large estate master planning and are found up and down the eastern seaboard.

Gil Schafer III served as the Institute's President and then Chairman of the Board from 1999-2006.
